Obituary

South Hadley- May Elizabeth (Cochrane) Bigelow, a resident of Hubert Place in South Hadley, MA passed away at Linda Manor Nursing Home in Leeds, MA on February 6th, 2017 after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure.
Born in East Bridgewater, MA on May 15, 1927 to Leo W. Cochrane and Sarah E. (Hayward) Cochrane, she grew up on her family's farm, and graduated from East Bridgewater High School in 1944. She then attended Pierce Secretarial School in Boston, MA. She was a mother, homemaker, Executive Secretary at Holyoke Hospital, and Volunteer Services Director at Providence Hospital in Holyoke. In her twilight years she volunteered, sharing music with Alzheimer's patients in area nursing homes.
May is survived by her loving and devoted family: daughter Joanne O'Keefe, of Farmington, CT, son Kevin O'Keefe and his wife Lorraine Clapp-O'Keefe of Northampton, MA, and daughter Karen O'Keefe-Walther and her husband Steve Walther of Belchertown, MA. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren Patricia (Mace) Ostrout and Jeffrey Mace; Dylan O'Keefe; Amanda, Sarah and Curtis Walther; and 4 great grandchildren; Joshua, Sarah, Jacob and Liam; and her friend and former husband, David Bigelow of Holyoke, MA. May was predeceased by her younger sister Kathryne (Florence) Cochrane and by ex-husband Daniel O'Keefe and second husband David McLellan.
May was passionate about family, caring for others, music, nature and gardening. She sang in church choirs for 82 years, most recently as a member of the South Hadley Falls Congregational Church. In her final years she never lost her naturally outgoing personality, feisty spirit, and sense of humor. She loved being surrounded by young people, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
May's family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff at Linda Manor, Leeds, MA and Hospice of Franklin County, Greenfield, MA for their compassionate care of her during her illness.
A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church (Center Church) of South Hadley, MA at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25th. Memorial contributions may be made to Feed My Starving Children, 401 93rd Ave., NW, Coon Rapids, MN 55433 and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105. Beers and Story South Hadley Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements.
