Obituary for Betty Jeanne Prouty

South Hadley-Betty Jeanne "BJ" (Dixon) Prouty, 87, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2018 at Baystate Medical Center with her children by her side. Born March 7, 1931 in Holyoke, she was the only child of Douglas Thornton and Lena (Wild) Dixon, and grew up in South Hadley. BJ went on to further her education at Northfield Mt. Herman, class of 1948 and Mt. Holyoke College, class of 1952. She married Stanley Marshall Prouty Jr. (West Point, Class of 1950) in 1952, embarking on army life in Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana and Washington, D. C. before the family returned home to South Hadley in 1971. BJ was a gifted and dedicated elementary school teacher, beginning in 1960 and retiring in 1982 after 11 years teaching sixth grade at East Meadow School in Granby.

BJ's spiritual inspiration and solace was found in nature, from the mountains of Vermont to the beaches of Cancun. She found great joy tending her flower garden and walking the woods in her close and supportive neighborhood. As an active alumnae of Mt. Holyoke College, BJ also often walked the campus with her devoted dogs. Her love of travel and history included trips with her husband Stan throughout Europe and to the West Coast to visit family.

In 1989, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Stan. BJ will be forever missed by her two children, Leslie Prouty of New York City and Douglas Prouty and his wife Rhonda Strunk of Portola, CA. She also leaves behind her 3 cherished grandchildren, Cody Prouty, Courtney Prouty and her husband Justin Platt, and Austin Prouty. At her request, she will be cremated with no public services planned. A Memorial Service honoring her memory and celebrating her many gifts will be observed at a future date to be announced. Donations in BJ's memory are requested in lieu of flowers to Granby Free Public Library or to the charity of one's choice. Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. For details, visit
