Obituary for Michael Walter Lee

Ware - Michael W. Lee, 69, passed away on January 6, 2019 (the Feast of the Epiphany) at his home with his family. Born May 6, 1949 in Medford, MA, son of the late Maurice and Ruth (Ellsworth) Lee. Michael was raised in Medford and attended St. Francis of Assisi Church and school. He attended Christopher Columbus High School in the north end of Boston. He married the love of his life, Rita (Hurley) and moved his young family to North Brookfield where he enjoyed country living for over 32 years. He then moved to beautiful Beaver Lake in Ware. Michael served in the National Guard Reserve for 6 years. He studied at Boston State and Worcester State Colleges and received a Bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology. He worked for New England Telephone before he was called to be a peacemaker and protector as a Massachusetts State Trooper (59th RTT). He was highly-respected as a trooper who was primarily stationed at the Sturbridge, the “55 Team” the Turnpike, and Brookfield Barracks during his career. He boxed for the Massachusetts State Police Team and was a representative for the State Police Association. He earned a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Anna Maria College. His love of helping people led him to become a licensed massage therapist as his second calling. Michael was a big fan of watching sports. He was a season ticket holder for the Worcester Ice Cats. He enjoyed following the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, and all levels of boxing. He also studied Moo Duk Kwan martial arts for years. He loved to learn about local history and developed a love for metal detecting and treasure hunting. He carefully mapped the areas he had covered and was always on the lookout for new sites to explore. What Michael enjoyed most of all was spending time with his grandchildren. He shared his deep love and extensive knowledge of music, his love of dogs, his sense of humor, and his caring nature with them. He enjoyed living right on the lake, catching minnows and eating popsicles with his grandchildren, and spotting bald eagles and herons.

He will be deeply missed by dedicated and loving wife, Rita (Hurley) Lee of Ware, three children, Steve Michael Lee and wife Martha of Redondo Beach, CA, Karen Miller and husband Jonathan of Belchertown, MA and Kathleen Porter and husband Daryl of San Diego, CA. He leaves behind his precious grandchildren, who gave him the strength to get up each day and always brought a smile to his face, Amelia, Olivia, Richard, Aliah, Brendan, Dylan, Desirey, and Tristan, as well as Sheyenne McCullough. He is also survived by five siblings, Maureen Smith, Nancy Wallace, Edward Lee, James Lee Sr., all of Medford, MA, and Dennis Lee of Reading, MA. Besides his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and John "Jackie" Lee. Calling hours will be Friday, January 11, 2019, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. at the Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Saturday at 10:00 am to follow in procession to a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Church. Burial will follow in South Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either the Second Chance Animal Shelter in North Brookfield, MA or to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
